Salt Lake City Federal District Courthouse
Salt Lake City, Utah
The Salt Lake City Federal District Courthouse is a 10-story structure with a design to allow maximum daylight including a full, 10-story atrium display of suspended, contemporary architectural metal shaped into hexagonal tubes on cables that reflect the daylight.
Mirror-finish, stainless steel borders the entry doors with another impressive architectural metal display. Centered in the lobby is a stunning spiral stair that further showcases the skills and craftsmanship of Southwest Steel.
The structural design creates a strong, iconic, transparent, and metaphorically egalitarian form that is a symbol of the American judiciary system. The resulting cubic mass projects with grounded dignity, immovable order, and an equal face to all sides. The structure resides in a garden setting on a level terrace encompassing the entire city block and establishes the required federal security setback from the street.
