San Jose Rotary PlayGarden
San Jose, California

The San Jose Rotary PlayGarden is a gift from San Jose Rotary to all the children of San Jose. The talents and craftsmanship of Southwest Steel are showcased in the green grass gates, sign, bridge, and handrails throughout the park.

The Rotary PlayGarden is a public park set on 4.5 acres in the Guadalupe RiverPark and Gardens in San Jose, California. Built with accessibility in mind, this interactive and inclusive PlayGarden enables children with special needs to play alongside their siblings and friends. The resulting PlayGarden design incorporates standard play elements and adds adaptive swings, a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round, kinetic art, sensory experiences, and much more. The stunning six-million-dollar project, which includes a new parking lot and reconfigured intersection, creates an inviting place for children with special needs. The project was successfully completed with donations from Rotarians, citizens, corporations, foundations, and in-kind services from local subcontractors and vendors. Hensel Phelps, General Contractor, closed a one-million-dollar funding gap by working with more than ten subcontractors who provided pro bono services. Southwest Steel is honored to be part of this team of giving.

The Rotary PlayGarden is designed to be fully inclusive, interactive, and delightfully fun. The park creates opportunities for swinging, sliding, climbing, spinning, and bouncing in a layout that encourages children to play together, regardless of their abilities. From the wheelchair accessible merry-go-round to the ADA swing chair, each play area has opportunities for all children.
